The drama surrounding the University of Florida football coach’s resignation, then un-resignation, then leave-of-absence, rambling press conferences and more has gotten a little clearer since the Urban Meyer 911 call details were released. His wife, Shelley Meyer, called 911 to report her husband was having chest pain and she couldn’t rouse him. That’s very different than the reports that had previously been released regarding his health problems. Read the 991 call details below.
On the morning of December 6, 2009, Shelley Meyer called 911 to get help for her husband. University of Florida football head coach, Urban Meyer, was experiencing chest pain on the morning after the SEC Championship game that Florida lost to Alabama. Previously the University of Florida had released a statement that indicated Meyer had driven himself to the hospital and was suffering from dehydration. The 911 call details paint a very different picture of what happened.
The Urban Meyer 911 call details were released on December 30, 2009. In the call, his wife Shelley tells the operator that her husband had complained of chest pain, fallen on the floor and she couldn’t get him to respond.
“My husband’s having chest pains,” Shelley Meyer said. “He’s having chest pains, he just woke up in the middle of the night and said he’s having chest pains.”
Shelley Meyer said her husband had taken a sleeping pill that night and had suffered chest pains before. She repeatedly tried to rouse Meyer, who was lying on his stomach on the floor.
“Urban, Urban, talk to me,” she says.
Shelley Meyer told dispatchers that her husband was breathing and appeared to be grunting.
“He almost sounds like he’s kind of trying to cry,” she said.
Meyer’s wife also told the operator that her husband had never suffered from cardiac problems or anxiety. She said he woke up and complained of tingling in this thigh just before getting out of the bed and falling to the floor.
Meyer had told news reporters that he had not wanted to go into the details of his reasons for resigning his position, then retracting his resignation and saying he was taking a leave of absence. He said that he was protecting his family.
“I didn’t want anyone alarmed,” Meyer said. “And I think at some point, whether you’re a football coach, whether you’re a lawyer or whatever, you think at some point there would be a lot of respect for families involved and children and 11‑year‑old boys and 16‑year‑old girls and 19‑year‑old girls that ‑‑ do what you have to do to protect them.
“If that means not coming clean with full details about something very personal, if you can’t understand that, then, first of all, I think you’ve got to recheck yourself.”
Okay, so that doesn’t make sense to much of anyone. However, with the Urban Meyer 911 call details released, we do get a better understanding of the whole situation. Regardless, we wish him and his family well and hope that he gets whatever his issues are resolved and returns to health, regardless of who will be head coach at the University of Florida next year.
