Polygamist leaders in Canada were taken into custody by law enforcement on polygamy charges. Yet gay marriage is protected in Canada, how ironic. Read more about Winston Blackmore and Jame Oler, see photos, a video, and a biography below.
BC’s Attorney General Wally Oppal does admit this will be a hard case to win. The arrest may not hold up. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom guarantees “freedom of religion” and has already been used twice to get polygamy charges thrown out elsewhere. And, gay marriage is protected in Canada, after all.
Is gay marriage and plural marriage a fair comparison? Many insist it is not. Still, it comes down to our society being liberal, and allowing people to seek out happiness in what ever way they see fit, so long as it doesn’t hurt others. So what is the difference then between gay marriage and plural marriage? Simple.
The gay movement has become much more popular in the eye of the public, mainly (in my opinion) because of the pop culture of music, television, and the movies. Will and Grace is much more appetizing than Big Love. Of course Big Love is probably the only example of polygamy in pop culture, and it is in large part a negative portrayal. But folks like Ellen Degeneres or Elton John are loved by millions.
It’s the puppy dog versus the cow standard. We don’t kill puppy dogs because they’re cute and cuddly. A cow, well it’s just ugly, so it is an automatic steak and a pair of sneakers.
Is this the standard the law should reflect? We like gay people, so we should let them pursuit happiness, but those Mormons are crap out of luck, because they are secluded and wear funny clothes?
By the way, these aren’t the normal Mormons. The mainstream Mormons, or LDS Church, abolished the practice of polygamy in 1890.
Biography
Winston Blackmore was once know as the “Bishop of Bountiful” as he was leader of the area for the Fundamentalist “Mormon” Church. This is the same churce led by Warren Jeffs. However, Blackmore was excommunicated a few years ago. He is said to have some 26 wives and 80 kids. His estimated worth exceeds 15 million, as he has assets all over British Columbia.

I think its good Canada is a little more permissive than we are, as we are wrong in our zero tolerance fascination with applying all sorts of laws on our “fellow” citizens. When I read the Bill of Rights I see a much different nation than the one we have now. I don’t think its authors intended such a repressive police state as we have now. Just go read it. In many ways our laws against our citizens are designed with one key purpose in mind, and that is to maintain the highest worker productivity possible for the government and corporations. They are a great wealth creating workforce, but they don’t get much respect outside of the job to simply live their private lives without undue government interference, whether it be the war on drugs(The US was very successful in using the UN to push equally stringent anti-drug laws all across the developed world), the rights of assembly, private commerce, you name it. Its basically illegal to even drink an alcoholic bevarage outside of the home anymore, either in public or the dui laws where one drink on an empty stomach can impair you to the point of having your life torn apart and all its future prospects. Anyways I am glad Canada has its own standards on some issues.

Canada allows Polygamy and will not prosecute if the Polygamists live in Saskatchewan province. ( 1 out of 10)
The marital family law there states that a person han have any number of sametime spouses under Section 51 of their “spousal definitions” in the Family Property Act. This act defines marital property laws. I don’t think it is right that Winston is charged with having more than one spouse in British Columbia province when one province over the judges promote Polygamy so that it cannot be prosecuted. Surely, this is religeous intolerence in BC.
