Kayleah Wilson left her home in Greeley, Colorado about 3:40 p.m. on Sunday, March 28, 2010. She was walking to a friends house to attend a birthday party. She never arrived at the birthday party and she never returned home. April Wilson, her mother, reported her missing and an amber alert was put out in hopes of helping to find the missing 12-year-old girl.

Today police have retrieved a decomposed body from an irrigation ditch about a half-mile from the home of the missing girl in Northern Colorado. The discovery was made when a worker was checking the ditch because of irrigation problems due to the heavy rain on Tuesday. The worker found the body in about 3-feet of water early on Wednesday morning.

Authorities have not been able to make an immediate identification of the body because of the level of decomposition. Sgt. Joe Tymkowych said, ‘The decomposition is to the point where it’s difficult to say whether it’s a male or a female.’

When Kayleah went missing, she attended the sixth grade at Brentwood Middle School. She is described as being about 5’1″ and 145 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. Investigators wouldn’t rule out that the body discovered in the irrigation ditch was hers, but said they also couldn’t confirm it. There is also no indication as to how long the body might have been in the ditch. The ditch has been searched at least twice during the search for Kayleah after her disappearance.

Police have spent today searching the ditch and surrounding areas for any evidence to help in their investigation.

Investigators say they will use dental records as well as DNA and hair fibers to identify the body. The quickest method is through dental records which could take a few days for a positive identification. However, if they have to use DNA and hair fibers, it could take weeks to make a positive identification.

At this point, there is no certainty that the body of the missing Colorado girl has been found, but the odds are that it is her. We’ll find out in the next few days.
