Cassie smith is a 20 year old, 5’8” girl weighing in at 132 pounds. She had been working at the popular wings & beer franchise for two years when her manager called her into his office and told this Hooters girl weight probation was the only course of action they could take given her ‘ballooning’ size. Now, she’s crying foul to the press, and the franchise may find itself in legal peril. Check out the full story and video below!

The chain restaurant franchise has been in trouble in this area before, firing girls who have lost their sex appeal, but they may have really landed in it this time. By telling Cassie Smith to lose weight or lose her job, they are effectively promoting unhealthy habits. If her weight is really 132, Cassie is already 14 pounds under the ‘ideal’ weight for her height.

The Hooters girl’s weight probation began after an annual review, she told the press. She was apparently brought into her manager’s office where he and two other women would give her review. Scoring well on the customer relations and food service side, the trouble began when they moved on to her uniform review.

“These women proceeded to explain to me that I had 30 days and they would give me a free gym membership, and if I didn’t improve within those 30 days I would be separated from the company,” she said. “If I improved a little bit I would get 30 more days, and if I improved completely they would leave me alone.”

The crazy part is, she wears an extra small! The corporate office refused to comment specifically on the case, but assured the press that the case was overblown.

“We will not make any comment on a current employee except to say that no employee in Michigan has been counseled about their weight…However, we will say that our practice of upholding an image standard based on appearance, attitude, and fitness for Hooters Girls is both legal and fair. It is not unlike the standard used by the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders or the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes.”

I think, if all the facts are true, that the company is hugely in the wrong this time. Forcing a medically underweight employee to lose further weight or lose her paycheck is just wrong. Do you think this Hooters Girl’s weight probation is fair game for this kind of business? Or should the franchise be brought to task on the issue?
