Tyler Clementi, 18-years-old, is thought to have jumped off the George Washington bridge on Thursday, September 23, 2010. His car was found nearby with his cell phone and computer in it. The incident happened just after he had been filmed in a sexual encounter without his knowledge by his room-mate and another student. The other students, Dharun Ravi, 18-years-old of Plainsboro, New Jersey and Molly Wei, 18-years-old of Princeton, New Jersey have been charged in connection with the Rutgers suicide.

Dharun Ravi, a freshman at Rutgers, twittered about his roommates sexual encounters. He reported on twitter that his room-mate had asked for privacy for the evening. According to his tweets, Ravi had secretly set up a camera in the room and when he left Clementi in the room alone, he went to Molly Wei’s room and watched what was going on in his room. Portions of his recordings were broadcast on the internet through Ravi’s twitter account.

Ravi and Wei have been charged with two counts each of invasion of privacy for using a camera to view and transmit live images of Clementi in a sexual encounter with another male on September 19, 2010. Additional charges of invasion of privacy were brought against Ravi for using his hidden camera to tape Clementi on September 21, 2010.

It is generally believed that the shame of these video tapes led to Tyler Clementi jumping from the George Washington Bridge on September 23.

Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan says that the charges against the two alleged perpetrators are fourth-degree crimes that have to do with collecting and/or viewing images depicting nudity or sexual content of an individual without that person’s consent. If the images are transmitted or distributed, it becomes a third-degree offense.

Both Ravi and Wei could face up to five years in jail if convicted of the charges against them.

Both Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei surrendered themselves to Rutgers University police. Wei was released on her recognizance on Monday, September 27, 2010 and Ravi was released on $25,000 bail on Tuesday, September 28, 2010.
