From mischievous movie stars to scandalous sports athletes, most naughty celebrities who have served behind bars fit one of these two categories. But corrupt politicians and titans of industry make an appearance too. Kicking things off, let’s take a look at those power-crazy athletes.
One can’t talk about famous people who spent time in jail without thinking about one thing: football. The NFL has given the U.S. penal system such celebrities as OJ Simpson, who avoided jail in the 1995 trial but later served in Las Vegas for theft. Then there’s Michael Vick and his infamous dog-fighting scandal, he spent 1.5 years behind bars for that charge. Others include Plaxico Burress for illegal gun-possession, and Nate Newton, who was found with 213 pounds of marijuana!
Don’t worry, other sports have given their fair share of trouble makers. We can thank professional boxing for one of the most consistent trouble-makers of all time: Mike Tyson. A prolific boxer, Tyson suffered from too much fame too early. He was convicted of a rape charge in 1992 and spent 3 years in prison for the crime. Making a strong comeback, Tyson’s career quickly made headlines again when he literally bit off an ear of his opponent Evander Holyfield!
Suspected jewelry theft, cocaine use, alcohol addiction, prescription drug abuse, what do these things all have in common? Lindsay Lohan. While sports stars can be aggressive, they can’t compare to the complete package that is LiLo. Going from promising movie star to incarcerated drug-addict, this actress is the poster-child of Hollywood’s fight against drug-use. Still, she’s now getting some solid competition from “Two and a Half Men” star Charlie Sheen, who’s drug-addled nights are becoming a recurring theme on the West Coast.
It’s one thing when celebrities ruin their own careers, but the story is much more sobering when they steal billions from innocent people. Enter possibly the worst of the bunch: Bernie Madoff. Formerly the well-respected chairman of the NASDAQ, this felon is guilty of constructing the most elaborate and costly Ponzi scheme in U.S. history. Calling it “one big lie,” Madoff was convicted of defrauding his clients out of $65 billion over 18 years and is now serving 150 years in prison.
Still, it’s not always the bad guys that find themselves behind bars. Often those remembered as revolutionaries were incarcerated in their time. Dr. Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi both served time, but then again, so did Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin. What do you think of our breakdown of famous people who spent time behind bars?
