Nicole Bobek, former figure skating champion and Olympian has been arrested on drug charges. She was part of a meth bust, charged with being part of a Northern New Jersey drug ring. Read about it below, see her mugshot and a video of her from her days as a champion.
Nicole Bobek won the women’s U.S. figure skating title in 1995. So how’s she been doing since then? Well, not so well apparently, if her mugshot and her current situation are any indication. According to Guy Gregory in the Hudson Country prosecutor’s office, she was arrested in her home in Jupiter, Florida last week and charged with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine in Hudson County, New Jersey. She has been accused of being part of a New Jersey drug ring.
Bobek, 31-years-old, appeared in court via video on Monday, July 6, 2009 and pleaded not guilty. She was released on a $200,000 bond on Tuesday, July 7, 2009. She waived extradition rights to face charges in New Jersey.
The former figure skating champion was one of 20 people busted as a result of a year long investigation into a meth ring. She could be facing up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
Oh what a difference a few years and a possible meth addiction make. Check out these photos of Bobek then and now.
Before the former figure skating champion was arrested on drug charges, before Nicole Bobek’s meth bust, she was an athletic and graceful skater. You can see one of her performances in the video below.

How does a graceful athlete become a part of a serious criminal enterprise over a drug not so different from monkeyed with adrenalin a neurotransmitter? I posit, it made her ill and affected her judgement and her health. So shouldn’t this be considered a ’sickness’ more than some demonic crime? As a taxpayer I don’t want to pay at least $35,000 a year for 20 years, and with inflation and court costs probably a million dollars to incarcerate her simply for drugs. I don’t know if other types of violent or mean spirited or financial activities were involved but I would suggest as ones’ eye can see its a physical sickness that impairs judgement and mentality as well and not simply a criminal act. I would rather see her put thru a rehab camp program culminating in work release and counseling over a period of a year. It would be much cheaper and reduce the rate of recividism if done right. And it would give her a chance at redemption. We as a civil society need to stop throwing away the lives of our citizens, tongue and cheek saying they made bad decisions. Its a sickness that affects the brain and the behavior it drives and should be treated in a better manner than just locking someone away and making taxpayers foot the bill for 20 years. Call this much needed taxpayer oversight to improve the efficiency and efficacy of our social institutions.
