When you put together the Tower of London and Beefeaters, harassment allegedly resulted when a female guard broke the glass ceiling. Read the story of female yeoman warder Moira Cameron here along with a gripping video report of beefeaters in action.
What is a beefeater? In British English a beefeater is a Tower of London prison guard, also known as a yeoman warder. Oh those English sure know how to turn a phrase! It is thought that the term “beefeater” stems back to medieval times where daily rations of meat were at a premium.
And what is anyone doing in the Tower of London in modern times? That’s a museum, right where they just talk about beheadings? Well yes it is for sure but the Tower of London is also a throwback to a bygone era.
The job of beefeaters there is to guard the Queen’s Crown Jewels and look nice for tourists. Not exactly something that should get the male testosterone flowing. But that is where the trouble begins.
As a biography, Moira Cameron is 44 years old and is proud to have become the first female beafeater ever at the Tower of London in its thousand year history. She did this after completing 22 years of military service in the royal army which is a requirement for entry into the exclusive beafeaters club. She enlisted at age 20 and has therefore spent her entire adult life on duty for country.
But rather than celebrate her success, that’s when the old boys club got nasty according to reports. Soon after she was assigned to the Tower of London her troubles began. Her wikipedia entry was rudely edited. She has been bullied, scoffed at, ridiculed at every turn by snide male colleagues. That’s the story if it is to be believed.
Three male yeoman warders are under investigation. Two have already been suspended for their role in the Tower of London beefeaters harassment investigation in which Moira Cameron was targeted by her male colleagues.
