So it appears that Roman Polanski bail granted in Switzerland has become a reality. The Polanski bail had been repeatedly denied by a Swiss Court, but that decision was reversed and a Swiss Judge stated that Polanski could be released to house arrest if he posted $4.5 million bail. The earlier requests for bail had been denied because Swiss authorities considered Polanski a flight risk.

Roman Polanski

Polanski was arrested in Switzerland and is facing extradition to Los Angles to face sentencing for his guilty plea for raping a 13 year old girl. He then fled the country after he learned that it was possible that the judge assigned to the case wasn’t going to go along with the short jail term that prosecutors were asking for.

The Swiss considered Polanski a flight risk which is why the Polanski bail had been previously denied. The Secretary General of Interpol made the following statement:

“Mr. Polanski has given us more than 30 years of proof that he does not feel bound to respect any court decision with which he does not agree,” he said. “The world law enforcement community should do all in its power to make sure that the Swiss judicial process is allowed to run its course, and if Mr Polanski defies the conditions of his release, no country should welcome, offer safe haven to, or defend his conduct.”

The fact that the Swiss decided to grant bail, and the prosecutor’s office has decided not to appeal the ruling granting bail, despite his past history, doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. The Polanski bail ruling allows him to go to his Swiss mountain chalet and he must wear an electronic ankle monitor at all times while the Swiss Courts decide whether or not he should be extradited to Los Angles.

Polanski was afraid that the judge wasn’t going to go along with the recommendation for how long he was supposed to serve behind bard. The initial sentence was for him to serve 90 days in prison for a psychiatric evaluation. After 42 days the recommendation was for Polanski to be released. The judge was going to make him serve out the rest of the 90 days, so Polanski decided to flee.

90 days for raping a child and this was too much for Polanski? I cannot believe that 47 days behind bars was too much for Polanski to take. If it was up to me he would still be in prison for raping and sodomizing a 13 year old, after giving her alcohol and sedatives. I don’t know what makes me more angry, that Polanski raped a 13 year-old child, that there are still Hollywood stars who are still defending Polanski, or that the Swiss have decided to release him on bail even though they know that he’s a flight risk.

So, Roman Polanski bail granted in Switzerland after multiple denials has become a reality. He will be under house arrest in his luxury chalet in the Alps. Sounds rough huh? I know if I were ever arrested for raping a child I would like my prison cell to be a multi-million dollar Swiss chalet with gorgeous mountain views. Additionally there is no guarantee that the Swiss will force Polanski to be sent to Los Angeles to face sentencing. Polanski does have to wear electronic monitoring, but I’m guessing that wouldn’t be too tough to get around if he wanted to run again. I’m guessing that he flees the first chance he gets, but that’s just my opinion. I’d love to hear what you all think about the fact that Roman Polanski bail has been granted.
