Rodney Bradford: The Facebook Defense Alibi

Rodney Bradford might have been just another New York teenager arrested and charged with burglary had it not been for his Facebook account. As it has turned out, time spent on the internet has proved to be time well spent for him. He is the first person to be cleared of a crime as a result of an update on his Facebook profile. It’s the Facebook defense alibi!

The 19-year-old was arrested on October 18, 2009 for suspicion of robbery. He was accused of mugging Jeremy Dunklebarger and Rolando Perez-Lorenzo at gunpoint where he lives in the Farragut Houses in Brooklyn, New York. One of the crime victims picked him out of a line-up and he was sent to the New York City jail on Rikers Island on charges of robbery in the first degree. He was already facing a robbery indictment from a separate incident in happened in 2008.

Bradford sat in jail for two weeks, until his father happened to see that he had updated his Facebook profile on the date he was accused of committing the crime. The robbery occurred on October 17, 2009 and Bradford insisted he had been in Harlem at his father’s apartment on that day. His father, Rodney Bradford, Sr. and stepmother, Ernestine Bradford, backed up his claim.

Former Representative William Jefferson

The former democratic Congressman from Louisiana, William Jefferson, is probably best known as a late night comic punch line these days. He has been such since the FBI raided his home and found about $90,000 in cash in his freezer. Cold cash Jefferson was found guilty of bribery, fraud, racketeering and money laundering in August 2009. Today, he faced a federal judge in the United States District Court in Alexandria, Virginia and was sentenced for corruption during his years as a public servant.

Bugatti Veyron in Pond Makes News

You know it’s Friday the 13th when you drive your $1 million Bugatti Veyron into a pond. That’s cause enough for a serious case of triskaidekaphobia! Actually, the accident happened on Wednesday, but just made news today, so I’m not sure if this can be chalked up to Friday the 13th or not.

A Bugatti Veyron is a rare French-made supercar that sells for $1 million or more. I guess the price depends on whether you get it fully loaded or not? You know, you might have to pay a little extra for a navigation system. Anyway, the Galveston County Daily News reported that Andy House, 34-years-old of Lufkin, Texas, was out driving his 2006 Bugatti Veyron EB along Interstate 45 in Galveston County, Texas when he got distracted by a low-flying pelican. He dropped his cell phone, reached to pick it up, swerved and ended up in a saltwater lagoon off of Omega Bay. His car submerged in 2 feet of water and had to be towed out of the marsh.

Mike Tyson Detained at LAX For Assault

This is one of those stories where the headline doesn’t tell the whole story. When someone reads “Mike Tyson Detained at LAX for Assault” it seems like it’s a pretty cut and dried case of Iron Mike Tyson just going nuts and beating someone up. That’s not quite how this story goes. While it is true that Mike Tyson has been detained at LAX after a scuffle, the alleged assault was with what Mike is claiming is an “overly aggressive photographer” and that he was protecting his wife and 10 month old child.

Ft. Hood Shooter Hasan Tried to Contact al Qaeda

Tell me this isn’t right! According to various intelligence sources Nidal Malik Hasan had been attempting to contact al Qaeda. Apparently the Army was even informed of Hasan’s contact but as of now we have no idea if the Army did anything at all in response.

What is even more outrageous is that Rep. Peter Hoekstra, who is the ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee issued an intelligence brief from the U.S. intelligence agencies, but was refused.

Chicago Students Arrested For Food Fight

A old fashioned food fight broke out and instead of the mops and brooms being broken out it was handcuffs. 25 Chicago students, arrested for food fighting, have discovered that things just aren’t like they used to be. I remember back when I was in school, which wasn’t THAT long ago, a food fight would get you suspended if you got caught, but you weren’t going to get arrested for it.

School Lunch

The students that were arrested were between the ages of 11-15 and went to school at the Perspectives Charter Schools in Calumet, Illinois. Read more about students gone wild, and administrators gone overboard, below.
